ICLEI East Asia Secretariat

Overall description of the stakeholder

ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability is a global network of more than 1,750 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. Active in 100+ countries, we influence sustainability policy and drive local action for low emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient and circular development. Our Members and team of experts work together through peer exchange, partnerships and capacity building to create systemic change for urban sustainability.

Hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan government, the ICLEI East Asia Secretariat supports East Asian Members in the Greater China Region, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia.

ICLEI East Asia works alongside local and regional governments to anticipate and respond to complex challenges, from urbanization and climate change to ecosystem degradation and inequity. We have developed various programs and exchange platforms, including East Asia Clean Air Cities, Procura+ East Asia, the Green Circular Cities Coalition, and Urban Resilience, to accelerate sustainable and low carbon development in the region. We invest in the capacity and knowledge needed to design solutions to these challenges and make decisions informed by data, scientific evidence and local realities and pressures.

In further extending our support to Chinese cities’ sustainable and environmentally friendly development, ICLEI East Asia opened the Beijing office in March 2018.

Stakeholder’s needs

UN Habitat suggests that cities already account for 78 % of energy use and 60% of greenhouse gas emissions, revealing the fact that cities are posing considerable impacts to the environment. Since 1990, ICLEI has devoted to support local and regional governments in anticipating and responding to complex challenges – including climate change – via multiple approaches.

Combining ICLEI’s knowledge and connections with local governments worldwide, and the EU’s pioneering governance and mature industries, we would not only be able to provide the best practices of the EU to local governments, but also offer strategic partnerships between local governments and key private/public players in Europe who have brought significant impact in combating climate change, to bring positive changes to cities in Korea and the East Asia Region.
