MoU with EU-KOR Climate Action Project Signed at LSAK Annual Conference 2018

Asan, South Korea; 12-13 September 2018. The EU funded project EU-KOR Climate Action closed a strategic partnership with the Local Sustainability Alliance of Korea (LSAK), which is, with more than 20,000 members, the largest nationwide network of non-state actors for sustainable development and climate action in Korea.

The LSAK Annual Conference 2018 was reviewing approaches and progress in Korea in pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the opening session on 12 September 2018, which was attended by more than 1,000 leaders and guests from all Korean provinces, the EU-KOR Climate Action was presented as a new initiative to SDG13 (climate action) and SDG17 (partnerships). Team Leader Gerhard Weihs and LSAK General Secretary Junhwa Yang signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a strategic partnership to closely cooperate in promoting a Joint EU-Korean Platform for climate action. This digital platform is the core part of the EU-KOREA Climate Action Project (2018-2021) funded by the European Union through the Partnership Instrument; it is a new avenue to expand collaboration opportunities to both Korean and European stakeholders.

Workshop on Close Cooperation

The details of the digital platform were further discussed in a collaborative workshop between the project and LSAK on 13 September 2018. The workshop was to secure an early buy-in of Korean stakeholders to join this unique instrument, which will bridge, through its bilingual Korean-English features, the language barrier for the exchange between EU and Korean stakeholders. This will allow the stakeholders to effectively share experiences, interests and needs, supported by a modern digital environment, and to form climate partnerships to accelerate climate actions. The positive response of the workshop participants let’s us all wait that the platform will go online by the end of October 2018.
